R & Z

R & Z is a monogram designed as part of a Typography and Media module, where the task was to experiment with calligraphy and create multiple letterforms using different tools. After selecting three letters to refine further, I developed a monogram inspired by traditional Roman calligraphy and the brush-painted serifs characteristic of the style. The goal was to translate the richness of hand-drawn details into a precise, digital form while preserving the essence of the original strokes.

Process

The process began with painting individual components of each letterform on paper, carefully considering the structure and flow of the strokes. These were then scanned and digitized in Illustrator, where I used Bézier curves to meticulously vectorize and refine the forms. Experimenting with different compositions helped determine the most balanced and cohesive arrangement for the monogram. The project culminated in a publication that documented the process, showcasing the transition from hand-drawn experimentation to a polished, digital identity.
